Sam Hogg has joined Open Prairie’s West Michigan office as a Venture Partner, with primary responsibilities including screening new investments and managing existing ones in the Open Prairie Ventures II and Southwest Michigan First Life Science Fund portfolios. Sam will be primarily focused on Michigan-based activities. Hogg joins Open Prairie as part of the first class of Michigan Venture Fellows – a program administered by the Michigan Venture Capital Association – aimed to encourage venture funds to hire local Michigan talent.
Prior to joining Open Prairie, Hogg was the Director of Venture Development for Detroit-based NextEnergy, an advanced energy research and commercialization lab, where he oversaw the NextEnergy Seed and Micro-Loan Fund and NextEnergy’s role as general partner and Midwest office for Nth Power, an energy-focused venture capital firm based in San Francisco. Before NextEnergy, Hogg worked for Michigan State University Foundation, the $400 million evergreen fund responsible for underwriting the commercialization assets and activities at Michigan State University. He also worked for Colorado-based Vail Resorts, the premier mountain resort company in the world, as an environmental technician.
Hogg graduated Summa Cum Laude in Environmental Biology from Albion College and holds a Masters in Business Administration in Finance from the Eli Broad Graduate School of Management at Michigan State University.
